Our History

Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare is a private, non-profit corporation offering a wide-range of inpatient/outpatient substance use with co-occurring disorders, mental health therapy, problem gambling treatment  and prevention services for adults and children to eight North Central Iowa counties;  Our history of accessible, quality, cost-effective, and patient-centered services represent a firm and proven foundation from which to deliver a qualified response to the needs of our patients, consumers, and communities.

This foundation was built more than 50 years ago by a small group of passionate community individuals concerned about the unmet needs of the chronic alcoholic. From that passion and commitment, we have derived and maintained our community-based mission to serve the public health population. As a longstanding community-based organization, established linkages and outreach networks have been developed to provide comprehensive, welcoming, and user-friendly access to our care. Special issues of geographic proximity, convenience, and special treatment interventions have been addressed in making our services highly accessible to our community members. Our longstanding presence in the community has established a preference for our services by patients and referral sources needing a quality continuum of care.

We embrace the biopsychosocial model as a theoretical framework from which to conceptualize drug and alcohol problems and addiction. This approach views addiction as a multidimensional problem of biological, psychological and social dimensions. Similarly, our treatment approaches are varied and comprehensive in nature to address the diverse biopsychosocial needs of the Iowa Plan population.

Supportive of the biopsychosocial model, our overall goal of treatment is to eliminate or reduce the use of alcohol / drugs as a contributing factor to physical, psychological and social dysfunction and to assist in arresting, retarding or reversing the process of associated problems for persons assessed with substance use dependency or abuse. Prairie Ridge serves over 2,500 different individuals annually.

The Prairie Ridge main facilities are located in Mason City, Iowa, with additional full-time outreach offices located 50 miles to the West in Algona, 30 miles North West in Forest City, 30 miles to the East in Charles City and 30 miles to the south in Hampton, which also includes a Drop-in Center.  Prairie Ridge’s main facility was newly constructed in 1991 and represents a state-of-the-art and engaging environment for our customers. The facility underwent an expansion in 2005, adding outpatient office and group room space. The building was expanded to accommodate on-going outpatient and residential needs, this construction project was completed the summer of 2017. The Prairie Ridge grounds offer an extensive outdoor recreation area, having restored approximately 15 acres of native prairie, which includes a one half-mile asphalt walking trail with abundant recreational opportunities.
