Peer Support

What Is Peer Support?

Peer support is a person-centered approach where individuals with shared life experiences provide encouragement, understanding, and practical guidance to one another. It is built on mutual respect, empathy, and the belief that recovery, growth, and resilience are possible for everyone.

Unlike traditional support services that rely solely on professional expertise, peer support is grounded in lived experience. Peer supporters use their own journeys to help others feel heard, understood, and empowered as they navigate challenges related to mental health, substance use recovery, disability, trauma, or other life transitions.

How Peer Support Helps

Peer support creates a safe and welcoming environment where individuals can:

  1. Build meaningful connections and reduce feelings of isolation

  2. Gain hope and confidence through shared experiences

  3. Learn coping strategies and practical life skills

  4. Access community resources and support systems

  5. Develop self-advocacy and personal goals

  6. Strengthen resilience and overall well-being

Peer support is not counseling or clinical treatment. Instead, it complements professional services by offering authentic connection, encouragement, and understanding from someone who has faced similar experiences.
